Scottish MPA Reportage Wedding Photgrapher of the Year Award

I just returned from the Scottish MPA awards ceremony in Edinburgh and was really pleased two win Wedding reportage photographer of the year as well as the open award.

Andy Earl, a fantastic photographer and thoroughly nice person, has photographed musicians from The Rolling Stones to Robbie Williams. Andy was asked to photograph Johnny Cash for his new American Recording’s album and this eventually resulted in a book filled with beautiful, honest and very real black and white images of Johnny Cash.
The book describes the process he went through to achieve the images in a wonderfully interesting yet modest manner and I was over the moon to receive a copy as a prize for winning the open category at the Scottish MPA awards this week.

The images which won overall categories are below and are both very significant to me in showing the two sides of my work which I am most passionate about. Wedding photography and landscape photography!

This image was shot on Fistral beach in Cornwall one evening after spending the day waiting for the rain and grey skies to lift. They never did lift, so I took the opportunity to put to use my manfrotto tripod which had just been given to me by my photographer friend Matt Pereira. Ironically, I have been photographing landscapes for many years now and have never owned a truly decent tripod ! So, it was definitely time to put it to use. The low light and moody skies at around 5pm in February were just perfect for the long exposures needed to create movement in the water. However, the constant rain forced me to take only a few frames before retreating with a wet camera, some very wet feet and, quite fortunately, one single, perfect shot.

Winner of Reportage Wedding Photographer of the Year, this image speaks volumes of what I set out to achieve throughout my wedding photography.
Capturing in camera one moment in time on a wedding day, a real moment, real expressions and a sense of the spirit of the day.
