Madeleine and Chris – A Dornoch Cathedral wedding, plastic sunglasses and a game of rounders.

Madeleine and Chris had planned a very personal and unique wedding at Dornoch Cathedral in the Highlands of Scotland.

The Reverend Susan Brown, as ever, gave the most wonderful service and included a special gift for the couple. Susan seems to come up with something completely unique but very relevant to give to couples during their marriage each time I have photographed a wedding in the cathedral. On this occasion it was a pair of plastic sunglasses. Here’s what she said about the glasses:

“I’m supposed to give you some words of advice before you reach the point of no return – it’s become a bit of a tradition for me, not to talk at couples at this point, but to give them a wee gift – a daft wee gift with a purpose. I’ve thought long and hard about what to give you two – and this is what I’ve come up with…

A pair of completely naff his and her plastic sunglasses! Why have I gone to such dizzy heights of generosity?  Because it seems to me that marriage is all about how you see each other.

If you never ever face any tension or disagreement in the years that lie ahead I’ll be most surprised – when those times pop up as they do for all of us, I want you to reach for these specs – Madeleine you go for Chris’s and Chris you go for Madelein Ell’s and put them on – and see if wearing the others’ glasses might help you to see things from the other’s point of view…

But I want you to wear them at other times too.

Whenever you feel things are getting a bit dull or routine in your marriage – that would be another good time to reach for your specs – and wear them as a reminder that you need to make room in your marriage for fun and laughter…

Let them prompt you to do something silly together – to have a candle-lit picnic on the carpet… or to go splash in some puddles… – something daft because every relationship needs the daft things to stop us taking each other for granted and to help us simply to enjoy one another.. ”

The beautiful elegant wedding ceremony was followed by a shoot on Dornoch beach and a then a quick change by all guests who headed down onto the beach to join us. A picnic and a dip in the sea was followed by a game of rounders. A beautiful, fun and original way to celebrate a marriage and the first time I have spent the day photographing a wedding reception with my trousers rolled up and knee deep in the sea!
